Fujairah day trip from Dubai: Snoopy Island, forts & the east coast

The short answer

Fujairah is the UAE's east coast — the only emirate facing the Gulf of Oman, about 1.5–2 hours from Dubai across the Hajar mountains. Come for Snoopy Island's snorkeling, the Al Bidya Mosque (the country's oldest), and Fujairah Fort. It's the best "completely different day" in this guide: mountains on the way over, a different sea when you arrive.

One honesty note: I haven't done this trip myself yet — my five Dubai days stayed inside the emirate. This guide is planned from research: official sources and current visitor reporting. Hours, prices, and logistics are hedged and dated — check before you go.

A different coastline

Everything about Fujairah's setting differs from Dubai's. The emirate sits on the Gulf of Oman, separated from the rest of the UAE by the Hajar mountain range. The water is clearer, the beaches are rockier, the backdrop is mountains instead of skyline, and the pace is slower. If Dubai's beach scene feels too polished, Fujairah is the antidote — and the drive through the mountains is genuinely scenic, not just transit.

When to go: like the rest of the UAE, October–April is the sweet spot — warm water, comfortable air, calm seas. Summer brings the same brutal heat as Dubai, though the east coast can catch slightly different weather patterns; check the forecast and sea conditions either way. Friday afternoons and public holidays draw local visitors to the popular beaches, so a weekday trip is calmer if your schedule allows it.

Snoopy Island: snorkeling and diving

The headline water stop: a small island off the coast near Al Aqah, named because its profile supposedly resembles Snoopy lying on his doghouse. What's actually there:

• Snorkeling and diving in clear water with coral formations — turtles and reef fish are commonly reported sightings.
• Rocky entries — water shoes help; this isn't a sandy-beach wade-in.
• Boat access only — you'll book through a local dive center or snorkel operator, which typically bundles the boat, gear, and guide. Check current operators and prices before you go, and confirm sea conditions — the east coast can get choppy.

Book the morning slot. The water is calmest early, the light is best for visibility, and you'll be done in time for the heritage stops in the cooler afternoon.

Al Bidya Mosque: the UAE's oldest

In the village of Al Bidya, north of Fujairah city, stands a small mud-brick-and-stone mosque considered the oldest in the UAE — centuries old, with a distinctive tiered design unlike anything in the modern emirates. It's compact: you'll spend 30–45 minutes here, not half a day. Modest dress and quiet, respectful behavior apply — it's an active heritage site, not a photo prop. Fujairah Fort and the old town

Fujairah Fort sits on a hill overlooking the old town and the coast — a restored 16th-century fort (rebuilt in its historic form) with three round towers and views across the date-palm gardens below. The adjacent heritage village reconstructs traditional houses and crafts. Together they make a solid 1–2 hour heritage stop and the best viewpoint in the city. Getting there

• Drive (recommended): 1.5–2 hours east from Dubai via the main highway toward the coast, through the Hajar mountains. A car is close to essential — Fujairah's sights (Snoopy Island operators at Al Aqah, Al Bidya to the north, the fort in the city) are spread along the coast. Check current rental requirements before you go.
• Tour: organized Fujairah day tours run from Dubai, usually bundling the east-coast highlights with snorkeling. Less flexible, zero logistics.
• Public transport: not practical for this itinerary. The coast is the destination and it's built for cars.

Leave early — a 7:30 AM departure gets you to the coast by 9:30, in the water before the wind picks up, with the whole afternoon for forts and mosques.

A sample day plan

Research-based — a sensible shape, not a tested itinerary:

1. 7:30 AM — depart Dubai, east through the Hajar mountains.
2. 9:30 AM–12:30 PM — Snoopy Island snorkeling/diving with a booked operator (morning = calmest water).
3. 1:00 PM — lunch along the Al Aqah coast or in Fujairah city.
4. 2:30–4:00 PM — Fujairah Fort and heritage village.
5. 4:30–5:15 PM — Al Bidya Mosque (north, on the coastal road).
6. Evening — drive back to Dubai via the mountains.

Flip the order if sea conditions favor the afternoon — your dive operator will advise on the day.

Money and practicalities: Fujairah is a mid-range day trip cost-wise. The drive is the main fixed cost (fuel for ~3–4 hours of highway), while the snorkel or dive operator is the one real expense — check what's bundled (boat, gear, guide, sometimes lunch) when comparing prices. Heritage stops like the fort and mosque are inexpensive. Eat on the coast: the Al Aqah strip has resort restaurants, while the local cafeterias in Fujairah city are cheaper and widely recommended by visitors.
